Poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) are the most commonly sold potted plant in the country. Every state has at least one commercial producer of poinsettias and each year over $220 million dollars worth of the plants are sold. It is no surprise that poinsettias are very important to the green industry.
Poinsettias are native to Mexico and Guatemala. In those countries, poinsettias can grow to be over 10 feet tall in their natural, setting and form woody stems.
The first US ambassador to Mexico, Joel Poinsett, introduced this country to the poinsettia in 1825. They began growing in heavy production in the 1900s by the Ecke family in California. The Ecke Ranch is still the leading producer of these plants and the cuttings today.
