We know that this time of year, most wild animals store up as much fat as they can to get through the leaner times of winter. I am beginning to wonder if man doesn’t still retain some vestige of a primitive belief that he should do the same thing. How else do you explain all the scrumptious stuff that we cook and overeat this time of year?

I put on enough fat at Thanksgiving and Christmas to last me until spring, and I don’t have to hibernate or go through long, cold spells with nothing to eat but twigs. But still, I do it, and a lot of other folks do it as well. Makes me want to take a nap just thinking about it.

There are roasted turkeys so big they will barely go in the oven, stuffed to the brim with the richest dressing. (And, yes, I know some people say don’t stuff the turkey, but most of those people don’t have a clue about what is good to eat.)
