Rappahannock County now holds the highest possible Local Composite Index (which means that we receive the lowest per-student amount from the State of Virginia. The Fair Funding Team, made up of Board of Supervisors and School Board members and administrators, is effectively working on legislation to correct this inequity, but it won’t be realized next year.
Declining enrollment accounts for around one-third of the lost state funds. This is not the time to raise tuition. We have an excellent school system and it should be effectively marketed to citizens in nearby counties who are not as lucky.
The budget proposed by the County Administrator provides less than one-half the funds needed to make up for nearly one-half million dollars in lost State and Federal Revenue.
