This residency brings Kid Pan Alley back home. During the 1999-2000 school year, Reisler was asked to lead students in a song-writing workshop as part of a project partially funded by the Virginia Commission for the Arts called “Making Waves.” Kid Pan Alley grew out of that residency, coordinated by RCES music teacher, JoyRollins, and RCES art teacher, Harriette Rosenblatt. Reisler was so excited by the creative energy of the students and the freshness of the songs that he decided to devote himself to writing songs with children. Reisler now travels nation-wide directing songwriting residencies, some of which include the making of a professionally recorded CD of the songs performed by professional singers and musicians of the community.
The first CD of the songs created during the Making Waves residency, entitled Tidal Wave of Song included such well-known musicians as Everything, Col. John Bourgeois, Paul Reisler and many others singing songs like Swimming in the Nile, Blue Valentine and We Lost the Fight Song. A CD of the songs from a residency in Nashville, Tennessee, features such musical luminaries as Delbert McClinton, Suzy Bogguss, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Kix Brooks, and Amy Grant.
