“I loved being at Scrabble School,” said Kopjanski and when RCES opened and she was transfered there, she cried because she wanted to be back at Scrabble School.
“There were many white children that last year, but as kids, they didn’t look at the world like that,” said Kopjanski speaking of the briefly integrated school.
By 1990 - when Warner decided he wanted to do something about it - the school had deteriorated and had become overgrown with weeds. At one time the school building was used as an animal shelter, and the land was a waste collection site, said Warner.
