wife of David Deutsch, the grandson of Julius Rosenwald - said that, “the community was always at the heart of the Rosenwald program.”
Ms. Deutsch had given a series of lectures on the Rosenwald Schools last summer at the county library.
“In 1911 (when Washington and Rosenwald met), there were no schools for African Americans,” said David Deutsch in an interview. “By 1932 there were 5,000 of these schools,” he continued.
Deutsch explained that although his grandfather through the Rosenwald Fund put up a lot of money for the schools, he was insistent that the bulk of the fundraising come from the community.
