And though this may please a lot of “not in my backyard” folks, tourism was declining in this area in recent years even before the gas price increases and the economic meltdown that has led to this mini-depression.
I’m certainly not saying here that tourism is the sole answer to the economic and tax challenges that our county faces. But it has been, and should continue to be, a vital source of revenue for a place that already depends far too much on property taxes to pay for necessary county services. It must remain an integral component of our comprehensive plan, a plan that aspires to maintain the quality of life that we enjoy here.
Nobody is talking about Six Hags over Sperryville here. We’re talking about our local businesses having more business. And that behooves us all.
It surprises me that there was also some vociferous opposition to the plan for a citizen’s advisory committee to explore the future of economic development here. Maybe it shouldn’t surprise me since there are alwavs a few folks around
