John McCue came back from a geriatric symposium at Johns Hopkins University with some food for thought.

Dr. McCue sees many older patients in his practice at Mountainside Medical Center outside of Washington.

“At first, I was depressed,” he told a gathering of Rappahannock seniors and representatives of the agencies who work with them at Aging Together’s Coriimunity Conversation on Aging on April 30 at The Link in Sperryville. “In our determination to protect our patients from illness, we’ve been prescribing too many medicines.”

McCue said the symposium discussed “polypharmacy,” the treatment of multiple conditions with multiple medications. “We’re always looking for perfect numbers,” he said: “perfect blood pressure, perfect cholesterol, perfect blood sugar.”
