going into the next session (should he be re-elected) his focus will be more on accountability and wasteful spending in the state, particularly with the Department of Transportation.

This past session he introduced a “Taxpayers Bill of Rights” to index growth in the budget to inflation and population, and a bill to require “zero based budgeting” which would require agencies to start from scratch each year instead of simply adding on a percentage over the previous budget.

Both bills, he said, were killed in the Senate.

As to his personal side, Gilbert was engaged to be married in Februaiy to Jennifer Wishon, a Washington, D.C. correspondent for Christian Broadcasting Network.

Asked if he had any hobbies, Gilbert replied, “I used to like to do a lot of things like hunting and playing golf” but that those have been “sharply curtailed” by politics.

“It is purported to be a part-time job,” said Gilbert of the House of Delegates, “but it absolutely is not.”

Gilbert is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the Southern Methodist University School of Law.
