who seem to specialize in vociferation. The committee plan is simple and benign. It calls for a volunteer group of citizens to explore ways to strengthen Rappahannock’s economic base. They would, I assume, make a report, perhaps with recommendations. That’s it. Or that would have been it, were it not for a small group of selfappointed watchdogs who started vociferating that this was the path to hell for all of us, and that this had something to do with housing developments and smokestack industries and supporting deadbeats who want to start a business. Or some such. That is called “contempt before investigation.”
A community like ours has to have ways to sustain itself for generations, to create opportunities for our children to stay and work here, a way to continue to strengthen our educational facilities, our law enforcement agency, and our emergency sen.'ices. I think it is past time that we all had that discussion. What is wrong with trying to develop and /or attract new businesses that are compatible with the traditions of Rappahannock? What is wrong with a discussion about where we want to go? What is wrong w'ith trying to make our county more prosperous for everyone?
I am sure I w ill get some interesting answers to those questions. Because one other remarkable thing about Rappahannock is that it surely has the highest percentage of opinionated citizens per capita than any other county east of the Mississippi.
