In a meeting Monday morning at the Courthouse, a bare 3-2 majority vote let a $2.00 tax levy be voted on the tentative budget for Rappahannock taxpayers.
On motion of VV. C. Campbell, seconded by H. B. Wood, Aylette Buckner added the third approval, with Capt. J. P. Cook and A. C. Latham voicing no.
The meeting for the tentative budget was a series of problems. The county debt was faced; th<3 estimated budget examined; and the present rate of $1.85 was obviously inadequate.
There was much discussion of the coming re-assessment. Since there was no way to tell whether it would be higher or lower than the present $4,400,000 (approximate) valuation, then the future could not be predicted.
C. J. Miller, voicing the belief that the assessment may be lower, gave his suggestion that the rate be made higher this year and lowered next year if the condition permitted. Mr. Miller said in facing the present debt and uncertain future, it appeared best to act now to put the county’s business on a firm financial basis.
C. E. Johnson, Jr., also approved the higher rate for this year to insure a “pay-as-you-go” county business. He approved of » earmarking.the increase to take care of the added expense of reassessment. He joined the voices of others in calling for careful spending in the future.
Capt. Cook oppQsed the increase on th ground that more was asked for than required by the tentative budget. He said he would fight the increase, if he had to do it single-handedly.
