era. In 1933, after the Peppers had enjoyed over 50 years of ever - increasing popularity in print, Clare Tree Major, founder director of Children’s Theatre of New York, decided that it was high time that the celebrated family should be rescued from the library and brought to life on the stage.
Mrs. Major’s dramatization of the classic was first performed by the Children's Theatre of New York in 1934, with the famous star of stage and screen, Viola Roache, in the role of Mrs. Pepper. Tho Enthusiastic reception
of the play *at that time led to a nation-wide tour at the insistent request of youthful playgoers.
Currently it is launched on the most ambitious journey of its career. Over twenty thousand miles, covering nearly every state in the union, will have been completed before the production returns, in the spring of 1950, to the dhildreri’s Theatre studios in Pleasantville, New York.
The performance in Culpeper is under the auspices of the A.A.U.W. of which Mrs. Charles M. ' Clement is president. The committee in charge of arrangementsis headed by Mrs. Ira Hopkins and Mrs. Robert Tinsley.
