As a result of the recent Pasture Edition of Rappahannock News many interesting inquiries and conclusions have come to our attention:
1. It is most important that Ladino Clover, like all other legumes, should be innoculated.
2. Requests for farm visits from land owners seeking advise on getting better pastures indicates we^are headed toward building that $2-million-a-year livestock industry.
3. 50-odd Rappahannock farmers plan to seed a minimum of ten acres of Ladino pasture in I960 and are receiving help through local P.M.A. office.
4. Regular advertisers in our paper have asked >’ ow can we tie pasture improvement in with our advertising.
5. That a co-operating county newspaper staff is one of the greatest assets in conducting a County Agricultural Improvement Program undei taken by its farmers.
Floyd Compton has done a good job, with his pasture improvement program. After much prying with questions, here is what was uncovered. On his eight acre pasture field he grazes eight cows and two horses from around A?ay 1 to November 1 or a bit later, depending on the season. During this time the cows run on. a two-acre pasture lot at night.. He stops feeding the cows on May 1 and starts dairy ration during the last half of September, long feed is allowed around November 1, again depending upon the season. How did he get where he is with his pastures?
In 1913 half the eight-acre field was a gall, by 1931 it would craze three head, and then mostly on Virginia Creeper and hen grass. Pruiiings from the orchard were spread over the galled 'area and allowed to decay. In 1943 one ton of gound limestone was applied per acre; since, 1945 500 lbs. of 20% phosphate has been applied per acre per year.
Mr. Compton, my advice is that it is time to make another application of a ton of ground limestone per acre. Also in view of the increased feed this land has produced as a result of the lime phosphate treatment it has had, better results will be had now from an 0-14-14 analysis fertilizer.
Innoculate that Red Clover you are planning to seed. Northern Necksand eKnland are the better si.ains for our section.
