Many people who saw a large “fire ball” in the sky Friday evening, about 7 o'clock, were relieved Saturday morning to read in the papers that it was a shooting etar.
All along the eastern seaboard, from Maryland through North Carolina, people reported seeing the shooting white ball of fire, described by some as looking like an enormous roman-candle. In each locality viewers had the impression that the shooting star landed in the field just beyond them. In several towns and cities people got in cars and drove a mile or two, feeling certain they could find it. At Amissville, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Johnson saw the ball of fire. Mr. Johnson, like others in different sections of the country, thought it landed Jn a field beyond some trees. He, too, werft to look for fragments.
Astronomers in Richmond state that the ‘‘ball of fire” was one of the largest of a recent shower of shooting stars, and that this one burned itself out before it reached the air that encircles the earth.
