HEALTH

(Continued from page 3) nutrition education.

The teacher in a third grade has written a song about milk. She has her class sing it to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.*’

Each year in one school the younger boys and girls were given Christmas stockings. Previously, there had been a lot of candy in the stockings. Since the school had been made more “food conscious” through the dental health and nutriton education program, one teacher thought it world, be better to buy the children tooth brushes and tooth paste and to limit the candy to one piece. Thus, the tooth brush and tooth paste would help encourage the children to remember to take care of their teeth.

Throughout the remainder of the school year, the schools have been visited—routinely by a nutritionist “from the State Health Department in order to give the teachers an opportunity to request more materials and ask advice when it is needed.

Interest in the program has remained high and although progress in dental health and nutrition education is very slow and the results are not. evaluated easily, it is felt that this program in Rappahannock County will contribute much toward better dental health for these children.
