Early this year similar programs were started in both Warren and Madison counties. In each county representatives from civic organiza-^ tions, church groups, and schools met with the health workers to plan a program that would interest the entire community in the project. The fourth grades in two schools of these - counties were used fpr the dietary survey. The survey showed that 96% of the students interviewed in Madison County and 73% of those interviewed in Warren County have inadequate diets!
I'mther results of the dietary surveys revealed that the children were eating a sufficient amount of meat, meat substitutes, eggs, breads and cereals. The daily intake of sugar and confections was found to be very high in both counties with over 50% of the children consuming from three to four servings of sweets per day.
Most of the children surveyed consumed milk every day but few were drinking the recommended one quart.
Inadequate amounts of citrus fruits and green and yellow vegetables were consumed by the children interviewed. In Warren County 68% had less * than one serving of citrus fruits and 72% ate less than one saving of green and yellow vegetables flaily. In Madison County 77% had less than one serving of citrus fruits and 76% ate less than one serving of green and yellow vegetables daily. f
These facts’were reported back to the interested organizations. Newspaper articles and radio programs publicized the campaign for better nutrition aqd dental health. Pamphlets describing the Warren County and Madisoft County projects were printed and distributed throughout the communities.
