State Fair Opens
A bee hive of activity is underway on the Atlantic Rural Exposition grounds, Richmond, for the 1952 state fair that will open Friday, September 19, for nine full days and nights.
Tents to house state exhibits, poultry, agriculture, swine, sheep and sheep judging have arrived and have been erected. The department under canvas will occupy 135,000 square feet of floor space. Special crews have repaired breaks in- the miles of hard surface roadways during the week. Decorations are up in all buildings and tents and flags fly from numerous masts at the entrance over the grandstand and on all buildings and tents. ___ w
The midway, traveling on a special 50 double length car train arrived in Richmond Monday night from Reading, Pa, after playing the Racing Fair. The shows and rides will be set up Tuesday and Wednesday and be ready for a specil preview shdtorng Thursday night.
Bleacher seats, fences and ring standards are in place for the first Statewide Jousting Contest that will take place in the .special events area, Friday, the opening day, at 3 p.in. Invitations have been issued to 150 “Knights” to partcipate and over 50 riders are expected to enter the contest. A cup will be awarded the state ^winner.
The gates swing open at 9 a.m. Friday. Official owning ceremonies will take place 'at the main gate at 1 p.m. with ARE officials parteipating. Irsh Horan’s Hell Drivers will appear before the grandstand Friday at 8 p.m.
