In our opinion both of these gentlemen have given the Seventh District and the State of Virgina a type of representation in Congress that is far above the average and is rare ’n these days of loose political thinking We do not support them primarily because they are Democrats, but because they are honorable men and have proved faithful to the trust that tire “people reposed in^them. -
“Senator Byrd has no Republican opposition •though he does have two other opponents, Clark Robb, a Social Democrat, and an independent candidate named Vise, who entered the race shortly before the deadline for filing. Neither of these candidates is well known in the state and the indications are that their votes will be very small though it is unwise to count anything as certain in politics. Senator Byrd's overwhelming Victory over Pickens Miller in the Democratic primary was a. testimonial to the high esteem in which the people of Virgina hold their senior Senator.”
The Daily’s editorial continues with a statement of the stand they have taken on the presidential election. ‘ It seems to be the stand taken by every paper about this - territory except a few of us-weeklies who are waiting or else making no statement.
Says the Daily: “This newspaper is supporting General Eisenhower* It believes that his election and the defeat of the Fair Deal party is a matter of vital concern to the whole nation. And there are thousands of true Democrats in Virginia who feel the Same way. The Republicans can muff their chance in this election as they did in 1948.
