Many upholstered fabrics have a stabilizing latex backing which keeps the yarns from slipping and adds durability, she added. Because of modem technology almost any type,of fabric, such as tweeds, matelasses, and even velvets, can be made from these durable fibers and are quite practical for family fabrics.
Vinyl plastics often are a good choice for active families. A woven or knitted fabric backing will add strength and should always be used on vinyl fabrics used for upholstered pieces. Many vinyls have a textured leather look, but avoid those which appear to imitate fine fabrics, Mrs. Payne cautioned. When choosing a family fabric, avoid those with loose loops which can catch buckles or invite poking with a sharp object, she added. A tight nubby texture is a good v choice. A soil-resistant finish is almost a must for family fabrics, too. For slipcovers, check for washability and shrinkage control.
