Millions of older Americans remember earlier decades in this century when TB was feared as the leading killer disease, the “White Plague”. People died by • the thousands, and bed rest was the recommended treatment. TB patients were isolated in sanatoriums. But many others were effected by the germ without even knowing it, as the germs seemed to be almost everywhere.
Today TB occurs sporadically in elderly people who were infected years ago when the germ was so common. Although these people did not realize they had the germ, the germs remained alive but dormant for some time.
If the disease progresses in these infected people undetected, they could infect others. ' Today TB is no longer a dreaded disease, but TB germs still cause trouble. We must still try to track down those who are infected and keep them under surveilance.
In a population of a little over 177,000, Christmas Seal funds are still needed to fight tuberculosis in the Northern Virginia area.
