Nearly all Lions Clubs collect old eyeglasses and send them to a classification center, also supported by Lions, which grades them according to lens power and distributes them to the needy throughout the world.
Virginia Lions support the Old Dominion Eye Bank, headquartered at the Richmond Hospital in Richmond. The Eye Bank is a non-profit organization which serves as a receiving center for human eyes, donated by those who have pledged their eyes to the Eye Bank on death. Eye Bank officials remain in constant contact with opthalmologists throughout the state • and through an amateur radio “Eyeball Network” with others throughout the nation - so that human eyes, as received, may be swiftly dispatched to the area of greatest need.
Currently, Virginia Lions are seeking pledges of eye donations from their fellow citizens. Eyes so donated, on death, to the Eye Bank are used to provide cornea transplants - to bring sight to the blind.
