“I heard Miss Lillian Gish on a talk show recently (talk shows are good for quilting) state that the only truly American art form was motion pictures: originated and developed in America. It’s an American art form, all right, but it isn’t the only one.
“American women created the art form of quilts, with a theme, with a reason and point in being made. They made them, and named them, though it is generally thought they got the men of the house to engineer some of the patterns.
“The names are charming: Log Cabin, Duck’s-foot-in-Mud, Toad-in-the-Puddle, Jacob’s Ladder, Job’s Tears, Joseph’s Coat, Turkey Tracks, The Devil’s Claws, Rocky Road to Kansas, 54-40 or Fight, The Old Town Pump, Drunkard’s Path, Philadelphia Pavement.
