The year or season just past proved to be overall a success to holders of big game licenses. Virginia deer hunters downed 34,117 whitetails during the season just ended. This was the best year since 1963. The kill of 13,620 west of the Blue Ridge and over 20,000 east represents an increase of about 6,000 deer statewide. Turkey hunters set an all time record in the western counties by taking just over 4,000 of these birds. Eastern hunters had good success and with the 1,453 turkeys taken during the Spring the total for the year reached nearly 6,000 statewide.
Bear hunters success fell off some from last year probably because of a lack of mast. The 276 taken, however, was good for the Old Dominion. Lack of mast seems to have opposite effects on bear and deer. Usually a good mast crop means a high bear kill and a poor crop a poor kill. The deer kill seems to go up during the lack of mast. When the mast is plentiful they stay back out of sight.
Virginia will receive nearly $750,000 for fiscal 1970 from the federally enacted P i 11 m a n - R obinson and D i n ge 11 - J o h nson acts; Pittman-Robinson funds are derived from the 11% excise tax on arms and ammunition and Dingell-Johnson funds from a 10% tax on fishing tackle. This money is returned to each state based on the number of license holders and the land area of each state. Pittman-Robinson money is earmarked for game projects, Dingell-Johnson for fisheries work. On the legislative ledger concerning sportsmen and boaters in this area are a contiguous state
