At stops in rural areas of central and western Virginia last week, gubernatorial candidate Henry Howell addressed issues of interest to the Rappahannock fanning community.
As Governor, Howell said that a major thrust of his agricultural policies would be to increase credit available to farmers. He said that he favored investing more state funds in rural banks to provide more capital for farmers who wish to enter agriculture or expand their capacities. Meeting the credit needs of farmers, Howell said, should also be accomplished through the preservation and protection of small independent banks which are sensitive to the special needs of farmers.
