Waste disposal is an increasingly important issue, stated Butch Davies. Where to put landfills and how to pay for them stir controversy, he said. “We need alternatives.” But, he added, costs of currently feasible alternatives are so enormous that rural counties will have difficulties affording them unless they cooperate with urban areas. “At some place down the road, I think technology will catch up,” predicted Davis, and make it possible for counties like Rappahannock to afford something other than a landfill. He added that research in this area wasn’t economical in the past. “Now it is.”
Young people today have grown up in a consumer, rather than conservation, oriented society, said Diana Bird. She asked if the candidates were in favor of a major attack on environmental problems through the public school system.
