and Winston, Inc., also publishers of Modern Biology. Chappel said he’d been given seven books for consideration and only found two suitable. He added that he felt his other choice for a text was beyond the ability of the average student.
James Wood recommended that Focus On Physical Science, published by Charles E. Merrill, as the new eighth grade textbook. Finding a book that is interesting is a primary consideration in selection at this level, he said. “It’s important to get students turned on to science.” Wood noted his choice of textbook didn’t use too many of the scientific terms that frighten beginning students away from the subject.
“Many children are turned off to science at the eighth grade level by text books that are too technical,” agreed Superintendent of Schools O. A. Norton. He complimented Wood on the job he was doing in motivating his students.
Brian Patterson reported that he wasn’t that enthused about the text he was recommending for adoption in chemistry. “I’m not all in favor of the one I chose but I have no other choice.”
He said that his students hadn’t been able to give him any help since they’d been unable to reach a consensus on which of the six books under consideration was best.
