Arrogant Utilities Utilities must balance the need for energy with conservation of the environment, Davies maintained. Where was the input to Vepco on conservation? he asked. Vepco spokesmen say they must have concern for their stockholders. “It’s arrogance on their part when they totally ignore the people they deal with,” said Davis.
“When Vepco shelved plans for the Surry plant, they had the nerve to charge consumers for the planning costs that went into the aborted effort,” Davies continued. “We have to make public utilities accountable to the people they serve,” he maintained.
The state legislature is unresponsive to the needs of the people when it’s members don’t address public utility issues and environmental problems raised by off-shore oil refineries, said Davies. “You let your voices be heard in Rappahannock County,” he told RLEP members, “but your community is larger than just Rappahannock and Little Washington.”
Independent Candidate Bob Murphy prefaced his remarks by warning the audience that “what I say here may be surprising but I have to tell it the way I fed.” He criticized the multitude of a\ laws that govern practically y every move a citizen makes.
