New science texts that will be used for the coming six years were adopted by the Rappahannock School Board at last week’s Board meeting. Approval of the new books went smoothly, with the Board accepting the series recommended by the classroom teachers in each field.
Assistant High School principal John Toth noted that Modern Biology, recommended for the standard biology textbook, was not on the state approved list, but added he’d been told by State Department of Education personnel that it should have been. He stated that the omission was inadvertent. Toth also reported that a number of other localities already use the text, including neighboring Oarke County.
Toth said he surveyed 40 Rappahannock biology students and found Modern Biology generally given as either first or second choice out of the texts considered.
“Does it contain anything that would be offensive to some parents?” asked Board member Arthlinda Quaintance.
“No Ma’am,” Toth answered. “It treats reproduction, not sex.” He added that the topic was dealt with “more tactfully” in the proposed text than in the text currently used.
