Board Chairman Beverly Massie noted that funds left over from the summer program could be used to pay salaries for Title I teachers until the county’s funds are restored by HEW.
Additional Federal Funds
The county may be awarded some additional federal funds under the Title IV program for inhovative or exemplary education, reported Hogan, presenting the School Board with his good news. He said that the program he envisioned for adoption in Rappahannock would center around the development of student work sheets designed to measure basic grade level requirements in preparation for competency tests mandated for graduation.
He added that he may encounter problems in co ning up with a program that meets minimum funding levels established for Title IV-C. Minimum funding for the first year of operation is set at $25,000. Maximum funding is $100,000. (The information sheet supplied by Title IV-C staff notes that federal funds for the programs will be reduced in years two and three, indicating that localities will have to pick up a greater share of the costs at that time.)
The School Board gave Hogan permission to continue with planning for a possible application for Title IV-C funds from the county.
In another matter, the School Board turned down a request from the Rappahannock Recreation League for use of the high school gymnasium for volley ball and basketball. Bloomer reported that high school principal Dennis Wingfield recommended the request be denied since he felt use by the Recreation League would conflict with girl’s and boy’s basketball practice and games. Chairman Beverly Massie suggested that the League resubmit its request in February after the high school basketball season is over.
Reunion
The family and friends of the late Luther E. and Ada F. Jenkins will hold a reunion on Sunday, August 28 at the Graves Mountain Lodge picnic shelter. Those attending should take a picnic lunch.
