editor which are unsigned or which are signed anonymously. Every person has a protected right under the same First Amendment to the United States Constitution to express himself. If he chooses to exercise that right, he must also accept the responsibility which goes along with it, part of which is to identify himself. If such a person feels that the personal or political ramifications of acknowledging his true opinion outweigh necessity for the public to hear it, so be it; let him remain silent.
Moreover, when the newspaper prints an anonymous letter to the editor, it leaves the publisher open to charges that, in fact, these letters are mere fabrications of the publisher whose goal is lo artificially manipulate public opinion. It could be alleged that these defacto editorials disguised as “letters to the Editor” were an attempt by the publisher to deceive the readers of the newspaper, especially when such “disguised editorials” are signed with such heart rending pseudonyms such as “CONCERNED BUT CANT AFFORD” and “LIFE LONG RESIDENT” and which coincidentally end by favoring a course of action which certain newcomers to Rappahannock County also favor in order to satisfy their
