Chores Shared
Another fresh concept used by the school is having the children share in the school chores. Ms. Harris said that all the students take turns on a regular assigned basis feeding the guinea pigs, straightening the library and cleaning up the kitchen. "It works out very well,” she added.
In the afternoon, the children take part in learning experiences in science, social studies, drama, art, dance, music and crafts. Visiting supplementary instructors give the regular teachers help in these areas, said Ms. Harris. Field trips are taken every week—sometimes locally to Old Rag, the Jordan River or other sites for nature hikes and sometimes into the metropolitan area to museums, special exhibits atid aft gallerifcs. Ms. Harris feels the different age groups involved in Sursum Corda’s program benefit from each other. “The children learn a lot by having contact with others, both older and younger. She said the older children can be very effective in helping the little ones with their lessons while the younger ones teach them patience and give their egos a boost. “That’s important too,” she added.
