To the editor:
When this newspaper was recently consumed by its present owner, an editorial ’ was published exalting one of every American citizen’s most cherished freedoms: the Freedom of the Press. This freedom is guaranteed to us by the First Amendment to our United States Constitution and is one of the cornerstones of our 200 year old democracy.
However, along with that freedom comes a responsibility of equal stature. If the responsibility which comes along with a Freedom is not met with the same fervor with prhich that Freedom is cherished, then that Freedom can not long endure.
A newspaper’s contribution to meeting that responsbility which guarantees the survival of the Freedom of the Press is a contribution which the people of the community have entrusted to the newspaper and which the newspaper is therefore dutibound to uphold. One of the newspaper’s obligations is not to deceive its readers. The newspaper may state its opinion, but it ought not to tolerate or allow any practice which might intentionally or accidentally work a deception on the people of the community.
