teachers at the school are "very aware of where children should be as far as grade attainment.”

Family Atmosphere

The school day at Sursum Corda begins with the teachers and students sitting together in a circle in a family-type atmosphere to discuss activities. “We put a lot of emphasis on student’s relationships with one another and dealing with their own emotions...In the circle, we talk about things that bother us individually and as a school. We solve most of discipline problems there.” •=»

After the circle is disbanded, the children are divided into groups according to ability for morning work in mathematics and language arts. Both subjects are given strong emphasis, according to Ms. Harris.

Because of small class size, the school is able to have a special period, a quiet time after playground activity when the children are encouraged to read on their own. "It took a while for the concept to catch on but by the end of the year, the children had learned to treasure the time they could spend by themselves—even the little ones,” said Ms. Harris.
