Life on the other side of the barbed wire is not the same. “Their living standard is lower,” said Michael. “The houses are not looking very friendly there, all old and unpainted. There’s a difference.” He added that three kilometers inside the East German border there’s another check point with guards. The area between the check point and the border is a special zone and the only East Germans who are allowed in are those with residences there.
He has been impressed with Rappahannock during his stay in the county. “It’s so wide and large. There are not many people. It is very beautiful here," he said.
Michael has had a few opportunities to meet younger residents his own age. “I’ve spoken to some. They are all okay I think.”
The Holschuhs think that Michael is “all okay”, too. Mrs. Holschuh said the young German is the eighth foreign exchange student who has stayed with them. “On a scale of one to ten, I’d rate Michael at one.”
“Or ten,” interjected Capt. Holschuh.
“Whatever is the top,” his wife agreed.
