Some 3000 grafted premium German wine-vine*, mainly Riesling, were planted this spring on 1500-acre Island View Farm in Culpeper County, owned by Gerhard W. R. Guth, MD, of Hamburg, West Germany.
It is believed to be the first large German vineyard investment in the United States.
Planting was supervised by Dr. Guth’s Geisenheimeducated viticulturist Joachim Hollerith.
For many years, says R. deTreville Lawrence of the Vinifera Wine Growers Association, The Plains, wine has been made in this country from Riesling, Gewurztraminer and other German wine-vine varieties, but the results have never tasted quite the same as a top Rhine or Mosel-made wine.
When the Island View types and perhaps others bear their first harvest in the fall of 1980, the wine will be made by German oenologists. The results will be awaited with much interest by American connisseurs, Mr. Lawrence commented.
