The task of making an effective appeal to this vital segment holds far more dangers for Miller than it does for Obenshain. Since it is moderately conservative Obenshain runs little risk of alienating his conservative base by courting them. Miller, however, could shatter his fragile hold on the “Howell constituency” by any mis-step which might be perceived as a sell-out to the conservatives.
The candidates have already begun to indulge in the time honored ritual of battering each other by association. Miller will attempt to hang former President Nixon and Sen. William L. Scott around Obenshain’s neck, and Obenshain will attempt to hang President Carter and Howell around Miller's.
In conservative Virginia, Miller may have the heavier burden to bear.
