Everyone who applies for a social security number, regardless of age or place of birth, must now submit documentary evidence of age, identity, and citizenship or alien status, according to Bruce Hundley, social security manager in Culpeper.
In addition, persons 18 or over who are applying for a number for the first time must apply in person. People applying for a duplicate card are flow required to submit evidence of identity.
The best evidence of age and citizenship is a birth certificate recorded shortly after birth and this is preferred, Hundley said. Evidence of identity should include material showing the person's picture, signature, date of birth or age, or other identifying information.
People not born in the United States should provide evidence of their U. S. citizenship or their immigration documents showing they were lawfully admitted to the U.S.
