This first planting, with vines spaced five feet apart in rows, will cover about five acres. During the next five years Dr. Guth plans to expand the planting to 250 acres. At present 11,000 vines are being grafted by Herman J. Wiemer at Bully Hill Vineyard, Hammondsport, N. Y., for planting at Island View next spring. Last fall the region was inspected by Professor Dr. Helmut Becker, head of the German Viticulture Institute, Geisenheim, Rheingau, and Professor Karl Bayer, and both were impressed with the German vine varieties growing in several Northern Virginia Vineyards, including the experimental vineyard of the Vinifera Wine Growers Association at The Plains.
Both Professor Becker and Dr. Guth are expected to take part in the seventh annual wine-growing seminar to be held Aug. 26 in conjunction with the wine festival at Middleburg. The event is sponsored by the non-profit Vinifera Association.
