More than 35 percent of all traffic convictions in Virginia during 1977 were for speeding 10-19 mph above the limit, according to Vem L. Hill, commissioner of the Division of Motor Vehicles.
There were 201,838 convictions for the 10-19 speeding offense compared to 45,613 convictions for operating an uninspected vehicle, the second-ranked offense.
The top 10 traffic convictions for 1977, showing number of convictions and demerit points assessed for the violation, were: speeding 10-19 mph above the limit, 201,838 (four points); operating an uninspected vehicle, 45,613 (no points assessed); failure to obey a highway sign, 24,971 (thrqe points); reckless driving, 24,415 (six points); speeding 1-9 mph above the limit, 21,110 (three points).
Also, failure to obey a traffic signal, 20,897 (four points); operating or permitting operation of an unlicensed vehicle, 20,693 (no points); speeding 20 mph or more above the limit, 20,445 (six points); no county or city tag, 15,150 (no points); and improper driving, 14,722 (three points).
Driving while intoxicated (DW1) ranked 14th with 8,379 convictions or 1.48 percent of total convictions. Since suspension is mandatory for a DWI conviction, it is not included in the Driver Improvement point system. Non-moving violations do not carry point
