President for his neutron bomb decision. Since the two candidates are wooing the same constituency, the philosophical differences between them may well become more blurred than clarified as the campaign intensifies and the summer fades into autumn.
The contest, however, is a remarkably straightforward one so far. Both candidates are well within the responsible ethos of Virginia politics. The race is, at least to this point, devoid of flukes, gimmicks or political aberrations.
If it stays that way, the result in November could answer an important question: Has the Republican party really become the powerhouse it has appeared to be in recent elections, or has it merely been incredibly lucky in the candidates the Democrats have sent against it?
The answer will lie in the outcome of the battle for the center.
