The race for the U.S. Senate" between Republican Richard Obenshain and Democrat Andrew Miller is, as expected, shaping up into a battle for the broad mass of voters who compose the state’s largely independent political center and moderate right.
Obenshain, at this writing, is firmly in command of the far right wing of the Commonwealth’s electorate. This includes not only the increasingly powerful—and increasingly conservative—Republican party apparatus, but also a generous portion of old-line Byrd Organization men. Many of these persons still call themselves Democrats, but in recent statewide elections, they have grazed contentedly in Republican nastures.
