If a producer is short on feed or is faced with thin heifers at calving time, he should wean calves early or alter the suckling pattern, Gerken said. Weaning calves at 30 to 90 days of age removes one of the primary stresses on heifers and makes more nutrients available for other body functions such as growth and rebreeding.
An alternative is to limit nursing to one time per day for 30 to 45 minutes until the heifer shows heat. This should not begin before 30 days after calving and can run for about 45 days.
