As with a car when winter approaches, a family must change “treads” when the family emotional climate is stormy. Individual family members have to rise to the challenge of storm elouds by shifting emotional gears and approaching with caution and respect the icy patch on the family’s journey through life. Because the family (like the perceptive car operator) was in tune with the climate, often a potential family crisis can be avoided by using communication skills.
For an alert driver, an unusual knocking sound under the hood is a signal that something isn’t working properly. Constant arguing in a family signals the same danger. Arguments can create more heat than light and short circuit the family’s communication system. Just as little grease on ball bearings of a wheel eases friction and saves wear, so the salve of patience and understanding can ease tensions and save wear and tear on the family’s emotional system.
A distraught young lady called frantically for a mechanic when her car wouldn’t start one sunny morning. She didn’t know what the problem was - just that turning the key in the ignition wouldn’t get the car going. When the mechanic arrived he lifted the hood, checked the cables to the battery, tightened them, found that the distributor cap had condensation which needed to be dried off and finally, discovered that the young lady didn’t have the key inserted in the ignition in a way which would allow the key to turn properly.
