New aluminized polyester fabric is causing new hazards in kite flying.
Some new kites are made of the metal-containing fabric. Often, kite string has fine wire included in it for extra strength.
“Do not use these kites or string near electrical wires or street lights,” warned Virginia Tech Extension specialist Glen H. Hetzel.
“If the kite became entangled in electrical wires or anything where electricity is present, the person holding the string could receive a severe electric shock,” he said. “Use string and kites that do not have any metal in them.
Hetzel, who is a member of the Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences faculty, listed the cautions

Boy Scout Troop 143 sponsored by the Mount Lebanon Baptist Church held advancement ceremonies at a , meeting on Monday, Marqh 12, with parents and troop committee members.
William ‘‘Yogi’.’ Bear, district commissioner, was a special guest and took part in the ceremonies.
Advancing in rank were Nicholas Bischoff, second class; Andrew Ellis, second class, Wayne Fisher, star; Kevin Lewis, tenderfoot and Billy Menefee, first class. Henry B. Wood was welcomed into the troop from Webelos.
Following the advancement ceremony, troop committees ?=met with scoutmaster Gene Fisher and “Yogi” Bear. Committee members are chairman Robert Heffern, secretary Gracie Caliandro, Linda Butler and Roy D. Ellis.

Training
Anyone interested in judging at county fairs this summer is asked to attend a training session Thursday, March 22, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Germanna Community College near Culpeper. You will be able to attend two sessions from the following areas: food preservation, food preparation, arts and crafts, creative stitchery, garden vegetables, clothing construction, home furnishing, educational exhibits and house plants.
