Assistant Superintendent Rob McDaniel reported that 81 ninth graders took the minimum competency exams required by the state this spring. Of that nummber, 73 passed the mathematics portion and 72 passed the reading portion with scores of 70 or above.
Of the 19 tenth graders retested after' failing the competency exam given last fall, four failed reading and five failed mathematics.
“How does the second test compare to the first?” asked Mrs. Massie.
Reading Scores Scaled
“According to the state, the second test was more difficult,” McDaniel replied, adding that the reading test had been scaled upwards. He recalled that the reading scores had been scaled to bring 59 percent up” to a passing grade of 70 percent after computer analysis.
In action on capital outlay proposals returned to the School Board by the Supervisors for detailed financial breakdown and alternatives, the board formally voted to hire county Engineer Fanning Baumgardner to work with a committee made up of two Supervisors and school Board members Beverly Massie and Alan Stokes.
After returning from executive session, the board approved contracts for four new teachers:
— Dawn Katherine Gehringer from Flint Hill, a first year graduate of VPI, for elementary school,
—Tina Tracy Neyhart, first year graduate of UVa, for upper elementary,
— Michael Anderson Kimble, first year graduate of St. Paul’s College, for social studies and coach ot track and cross country, . —Robert Adair Edmonson, graduate of James Madison University with a year’s teaching experience in Franklin County, for physical education and coach of basketball and baseball. The board also approved hiring Henry Gore as a bus driver.
