Speaking on behalf of the committee, Eastham acknowledged that there is over-crowding in spots at both schools but claimed space needs could be met by proper scheduling.
After a presentation from a Reston architectural firm and lengthy discussion marked by repeated interruptions from Eastham, the board, in a split vote, directed superintendent William Bloomer to develop a plan for dividing elementary classrooms with room dividers and-or changing to three-hour kindergarten classes. Bloomer was ordered to have the plan ready by the May 13 board meeting.
In addition, the superintendent was also told to withdraw the supplemental budget request for a double modular unit from the proposed 1980-81 budget school budget currently before the supervisors.
Eastham reported that he, Stokes and Masterson had visited both schools last week to determine space needs and maintenance status. Under maintenance, the committee gave roof repairs top priority. For the elementary school, Eastham further recommended an inspection of the electrical system, erection of guard rails on ramps to the modular units, elimination of drafts from windows on the north side of the school and added insulation throughout the building.
