Representing the local Izaak Walton League, Bob Dennis described the N.P.E.A. permit application as “vague and inexact.” While supporting a properly located, operated and supervised church camp in accord with the county’s zoning ordinance, Dennis questioned the right of the campground to operate in ways that disturb neighboring property owners and requested that the variance be denied.
Norma Langbein stated her objections to the camp ground, adding that she sympathized with the members of the church whose leaders didn’t inform them properly regarding what was legal under Rappahannock’s zoning ordinance. “Not one of us want to take away your church,” she stated, adding that she felt better knowing that N.P.E.A. was a legitimate church and not some type of cult. Her offer to play a tape recording of the camp meeting services made at 11 p.m. was accepted by the BZA.
“You have a volume control on that,” interjected Rev. Savage. “I wish I could turn it up to full volume. I wish you could hear! You know this isn’t as amplified as it was,” she told Savage.
