A measles epidemic has struck Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly. to date affecting 16 students out of approximately 300 enrolled.
According to health department director Dr. John Einarson. the outbreak began when a student returning from England came down with the disease. The youngster was excluded from school on September 17, said Einarson. too late to prevent others from contracting the highly contagious red measles.
The health department director for the five-county planning district warned that parents cannot rely, in all cases, on earlier shots to provide immunization. Other outbreaks of the disease around the state in the past few years have shown that infants inoculated before a year old are not fully immunized.
In addition, said Einarson, when measles shots were first available in 1964. the immunization was often given with too much gamma globulin or in a two-step procedure using inactivated vaccine followed by activated vaccine. In these cases, with shots administered before 1970, youngsters often lack full protection, according to Einarson.
