corn harvest. The areas of the state showing the greatest lack of rainfall. Tidewater and parts of Central Virginia, is where 70 percent of the corn for grain is grown.

Ernest Wrenn, Southampton County Extension agent, reported that the corn yield per acre is usually in the 90-bushel range in a good year. This year, however, Wrenn says that yields have been cut in half or less, to 45 bushels or under per acre.

"It is definitely going to be one of the worst years financially for farmers that 1 can remember,” Wrenn stated.
