He noted that this form of measles doesn’t present the added threat of birth defects to pregnant women but added that it is still dangerous in a pregnancy because the expectant mother may come extremely ill.
Immunization is effective if given within a day of exposure to measles, according to Einarson. If the person has already contracted the disease, the shots will not increase its severity, he said. Einarson added that those people who have had measles usually are protected against a second bout. “It is very uncommon to get it again if you’ve had it once." he said.
According to Einarson, no cases have yet been reported in Rappahannock public schools. “We’re working now to contain the outbreak,” he said, adding that the health department stands ready to begin mass inoculation clinics if such measures are indicated.—D. H.
